How a Dam Forms
Attic heat melts the underside of the snowpack. Meltwater runs down until it crosses the cold overhang at the eave and refreezes into a ridge. The ridge ponds water behind it, and that water works under shingles and slate into walls. It's a roof-heat problem presenting at the gutter line.
What Gutters Do and Don't Cause
Clean gutters don't cause dams, and guards don't either. But clogged gutters make it worse: trapped wet debris freezes into a block that seeds the ridge early, holds meltwater against fascia, and expanding ice pulls runs off the house. The best gutter-side prevention is a real post-drop fall cleaning, after the oaks finish in mid-November.

Pre-Winter Checklist
Gutters cleaned and downspouts flushed after final drop. Hangers and pitch verified, because ice load finds weak fasteners. Fascia inspected while repairs are easy. And if last February built icicle curtains, get an insulation contractor into the attic.
